I hate my job. I am a custodian at a middle school. I work 10am to 630 pm monday through friday. I get paid decent money ($ 11.17 an hour) and i like having off on the weekends its just that it pretty much takes up my whole day. I really want to go to college to be a kindergarten teacher but i dont have time. Plus my boss wont allow me to change my hours around to help me go to school. She says i have to switch to a 3rd shift position but that could take awhile waiting for a position to open up. My boss takes off weeks at a time and i am left by myself to run the entire school. I dont like being looked down upon just because of my job. thats how i am treated by teachers and staff because i am a janitor. I think i am doing pretty well for myself though. I am 21 and I have my own house and am about to get married. Which is another problem. I asked my boss to have off december 16 through the 26 because my fiance and i wanted to go on a disney cruise and get married in the bahamas. he said he will have to think about it because we have programs we have to set up that week and he cant do it himself. which i understand. what i dont get is how he can leave me for 2 weeks to run the school all by myself and that is fair but i cant go away to get married and him be alone. Its like i have to get an okay from him to be able to get married. I would say okay im going to just go and deal with the consequences later, but my boss can be a real jerk and i will pay for it later. He always gives me the shitty end of the deal. I really dont know what to do. I want to better myself and i dont know how to do it. I feel like this job is holding me back in life. what should i do?
oh and i have enough vacation time to go away. which i dont get if i have the time why cant i use it. Plus i am giving him a 4 month notice.

Quit your job and go on unemployment. That is what most liberals do.

definately start browsing other profesions, you could maybe land a part time job that gives u the same money, then u could get a degree online or in the classroom, which will open up many other opportunities. if you are a hard worker and are good with people. you should be able to get a better job. just dont limit your own abilities because anyone can be succesfull(:
find a new job. seriously.. you only live once, why be miserable at what you do. plus it sounds like your employer is not very family friendly.. you are giving more then adequate notice for a vacation to get married… I understand your bosses concern about being understaffed, but that should be more then enough time to find someone else to help set up for the events. I went to school to be a CPA, and HATED my job. So I went back to be a cosmetologist, my parents flipped out but I’m happier then ever. Do what makes you happy!! good luck!
My boss sucks too. Sorry, but that’s why its called work and not super-fun-vacation time! Be thankful that you have work, especially such great hours, monday-friday 10-630 isn’t a bad schedule at all! And definitely don’t quit without getting something else in line first. I quit my job 3 years ago, and after applying to 69 different places I finally- last week- was offered a position. The labor market is really tough right now. I have an excellent work history and still had a terrible time finding a job, let alone one that had such great hours and decent pay.
Stick with it, at least for now but look around for other opportunities, theres not a whole lot of other options out there right now, but theres nothing wrong with looking. And you quitting and putting yourself in the poor house isn’t going to be any skin off of his nose, and if you leave him high and dry, you will pay for it with a negative reference.
If you want to go to school there are several on line options. Your local university probably offers a lot of stuff online, University of Alaska, Kenai Peninsula College has a ton of online classes, and they don’t charge out of state tuition. Theres also univ. of Phoenix, and still others that are made for working adults.
Just be patient with him and bring it up to Human Resources and that you could report him for leaving you on the job and school isnt even in session so why is that vacation time when school is not even in session
You cannot Quit and go on Unemployment you have to be laid off for that. I have been out of work for over a YEAR not at my choice. look for new employment hold off on school till you can find a job that will give you time for school. in the mean time start in sept. taking classes on saturdays and maybe 1 night per week at a community college. i know someone who works in Manhatten and goes to school at night. she has 8pm-10pm classes. and as for your bosses vacations he or she put in the time and that is that. be happy you have a job not to be nasty but its true. dont quit till you find something else.

I commend you for wanting to go to school and find a new line of work, but it looks like that may be very difficult in your current situation. I’d start looking for a new job that will accommodate a more flexible schedule and pays roughly the same amount and then start making plans for school. Good luck to you!
I’m sorry you are stuck in a job you dislike. I don’t believe we are here to hate our jobs! Have you looked into selling products from home? These companies are great for part-time or full-time work. I currently and an Independent Distributor for a company that I love! Getting started is easy and believe me, everybody loves this product!
