Q&A: Should a book a cruise for December now?
Question by occollegefoodie: Should a book a cruise for December now?
The bf and I want to take a 3 day cruise to Mexico in December. I found a deal a main upper deck ocean view cabin for $ 590 total including taxes.
Is this a good deal? And if so, should I book it now or will there be better deals very last minute?
I also have a few other questions: Does deck level matter? Does oceanview or inner cabin make a difference since you’re barely in your room? Do I have to pay the total upfront? If so, what’s the refund policy and how much is insurance?
If you know a travel agent that could answer these questions for me and/or give me a better deal and is in the OC area please refer me to them. Or if they could communicate with me via email that would be fine as well. THANKS SO MUCH!

$ 590 isnt a bad price but I have seen lower. In fact, you can get a 4-day cruise for that price, depending where you want to depart from. Check prices on this site..http://vacationstogo.com/ticker.cfm?rm=1&r=0&l=8&m=200912&n=1
You will see better deals especially with Carnival.
Deck level doesnt really matter. Some people like to be near the buffet deck or casino area. Mid ship is usually best for cabin location.
I like balcony cabin if its not to much extra. Nice to walk out there and hang out. Inside cabins are like caves, very dark. You pay deposit first, then you make final payment like 30 days prior to cruise. Refund policeys vary from all cruise lines. I never purchased Insurance, you can but it doesnt cover everything.
I suggest you call 1800 carnival. Ask them all questions. They will be happy to answer them and discuss there specials. There are many good prices in December. Shoot me an email anytime if you like.

That sounds rather high, but if it’s Christmas or New Year’s week, then maybe not. That’s the most expensive time to cruise. Those cruises tend to sell out earlier than others, too, so it’s not too soon to book.
“Very last minute” is relative. You need to book at least several days in advance, so the cruise line can submit its manifest to security.
Whether or not you have to pay the entire fare now depends on the policy of the cruise line. They usually require full payment if your cruise date is within 60 days of booking. There are restrictions on whether your fare is refundable, but if you have doubts about whether you may be able to make the cruise, then you definitely want to look into “cancel-for-any-reason” cruise insurance.
Whether the deck level or type of room matters is entirely up to you. It sounds like you really aren’t familiar with what’s involved with cruising, so you may want to do some research on that. Your library or bookstore will have books that will give you a general idea of what the variables are.
If you’re a member of AAA, they have good agents. Or just go to a reputable travel agency in your area.
You also may not be able to cruise on all of the lines, depending on your age, so you’ll need to check on that if you are under 25.
I know an excellent travel agency.
They are called select sailings.
The number is 800-298-8688
The best part about them is they don’t charge a booking fee.
Just call them and find out if they have anything cheaper then what you are looking for. They helped me our a ton.
December is one of the most expensive times to cruise, so the price you were given may be pretty good considering the season. December cruises often fill up early, so book asap. An inside cabin is fine if you don’t spend much time in the cabin and your not claustrophobic. Deck level really doesn’t matter. The more your cabin is in the middle of the ship, the less you feel movement. On payment for cruises, usually a deposit is all that is due right away. Then they often request full payment between 90 to 60 days before the cruise, so since this is the middle of September, then they may request payment in full. Also you need to know that these 3 day cruises are pretty much party cruises with lots of drinking too, just so you know that. On cruise insurance for a 3 day cruise it is usually way under $ 100, but the cruise company should give you an exact figure.
I wont answer the questions that others have answered. I just want to add that I’ve been on many cruises, and have had both interior and exterior cabins. I have never noticed a difference. I rarely looked out the window. If we’re approaching land, I like to be on deck to see it. If you put the t.v. on, it will give you the weather. The only inconvenience is that when you awake, you don’t know whether it’s day or night, so you need a watch or clock that lights up. Or a flashlight. I don’t get claustrophobic. Maybe it matters if you do. Whatever you do, have a great time.
