What are some tips for traveling cross country with Bearded Dragon in winter?
Question by alwayz_prazn: What are some tips for traveling cross country with Bearded Dragon in winter?
We are going on a cross country road trip, stopping in 2 hotels before getting to our destination. We will be traveling the last week of December and I would like to know how best to travel with my adult bearded dragon the easiest way possible, with no stress to him. I don’t want to lose him. It’s not an option to leave him unless we gave him a new home. How do I keep him warm throughout the car rides? It’s about 11 hours first day, 9 hours next day and 6 1/2 hours following day good weather permitting.

There is no possible way you are going to be able to do that with no stress to him.
It would be in his best interest to leave him at home with a friend or board him at a petstore. I’m sure there is some way you could find boarding for him.
Its going to likely be cold as balls and you’ll have to keep him warm by keeping the car heater up. There are outlet adapters you can put in the cigaratte lighter of a car that you could theoretically plug a heat lamp into, but I think that might not be very safe.
He’s going to be stressed out and not likely to eat; in all honesty he would probably be fine for a week left at your empy house with heat lights on a timer and a big meal before you go and some extra crickets in his cage

I do reptile show,s all through out the country and as long as you don’t let it get below around 77 degrees, your beardie should be fine. You on the other hand, you will probably be uncomfortable most of your trip, but if you wish for your animal to stay healthy and happy, you must endure, or you can try a temporary heat pad, like you get for your back in the health/ beauty section at wal mart. They last like 8-10 hrs and as long as is doesn’t have direct contact it should be o.k. the pad s heat up to like 115 degrees. Get a travel case and place the pad under it and cover it so it cannot get direct wind from a window, a really cold breeze can make it sick, no matter how much heat you have it on. Then you would also have to keep it warm in your motel room, good sleeping temps for you may be to cool for your beardie so there goes another heat pad for overnight. You could order heat pacs from big apple herptological that last up to 40 hrs i think, i know for sure they have 35hr ones, that’s what i use to ship animals that i sell, all the time, and they are not really that expensive. I think it cost more to ship them than the heat pacs, them selves. Those are just a few ideals, I’m sure you will get more.
a hot water bottle can be handy as well each stop change hot water to keep it hot, even the wheat bags can be used in same way, both placed on or under what ever your transporting beardie in.
