Are you planning to visit France soon? If that is the case, you might want to familiarize yourself with the French culture. Of course, you do not want to offend the Frenchmen in any ways. The following are some tips for you:

  • Learn French – It is very important for you to learn French (even just a few phrases.) This is because the French people take pride in their language. Most of them get offended when people try to communicate with them using straight English. Do not worry if you do not know how to speak French well. The French people do not mind as long as they see that you are trying to speak to them using their language.
  • Dress well – The French are very fashionable people. Try to be always informed about the latest fashion trends. You might want to ask help from a French friend regarding the clothes that you should wear.
  • Be respectful – It is very important to be respectful in France. Always say “Bonjour” and “Au Revoir” when speaking to other French people. Do not forget to add “Monsieur” and “Madame” when addressing their names. It is also important for you to use the word “vous” instead of “tu.” Both words mean “you,” but “vous” is more formal and should be used to maintain formality with someone.
  • Never use wealth as a discussion topic – If you want to have a small talk with French people, think of other topics aside from wealth. The French people hate those who are trying to boast about their wealth. Good topics include culture, family, and even gossip.
  • Order more than one dish in a restaurant – It is customary to do this in every French restaurant. You will not really have any trouble complying with this tip. This is because French cuisine is very tasty and you will definitely be tempted to order more than a dish.
  • Bring only what you need – Never bring too much items since the busy streets of France are where pickpockets linger. Do not bring too much money. If you plan to visit Paris (you should), you should prepare a lot of spare change. This is because every service has to be paid for. This includes the use of toilettes in bars.
  • Learn eating etiquettes – You will need information about French etiquette no matter where you eat, either in French fancy restaurants or at the dining area of cheap hotels. When eating bread, do not take a bite from the whole piece. Tear a piece and eat it. It is also very important to keep your hands on the table.
