Question by Gogo: Christmas in Spain alone? ?
Hi,
I’m planning to spend the Christmas week in Malaga, Spain because I found really good deal for condo. I’ll be alone for this trip since this plan came up in last minute. I normally don’t have any problem to travel alone, but I’ve heard that Christmas is very family tradition in Spain. Is anyone has suggestions the best things to do or the best place to go on Christmas Eve or Christmas day alone in Spain.

Thanks,

Question by dominic: Which house for Christmas? My girlfriends parents or my family? Little complicated when you read details?
Which house for Christmas? My girlfriends parents or my family? Little complicated when you read details?
Me and my girlfriend have been together almost 6 months. She has some sort of prejudice against my family because most of them are older(over40) and not married. She is very close with her family and I with mine. She met my Mother under protest and is very unhappy about meeting the rest of my family(2 brothers and 3 sisters) We spent Thanksgiving at her parents house(slept over, 1.5 hours away) she says her family makes a big deal of Christmas eve and they exchange presents then and I said I would like to be with her on xmas eve and spend the night at her parents house. So I said my family does presents on Christmas day and I would like to be with them and I would like her to be there also. She does not want to travel back on xmas day so she says its okay if I do not want to spend the holiday with her but instead with my family. I feel like she is making me choose between my family or her, is this fair? What am I missing?
Thanks

Question by Kris: Any ideas for a perfect gift for my half sister for Christmas?
She always manages to come up with ideas that are amazing. You know that she gave it a lot of thought and hand-picked it for you. As a result she makes you feel really special, and I want to come up with something that makes her feel like I gave it a lot of thought. The problem is that, although I have been thinking about it and keeping my eyes open for ideas for the last couple of months, I just don’t have any major brainstorms. And to make matters worse, Mom has become aware that she has come up with something extra special for me this year. So maybe someone out there has an idea?!?

For the record, she is a professional speaker/author who deals with human resources/communications types of issues. Her work is her passion, and she travels a lot for it. She’s vegetarian; in her 50’s; lives in the mountains; married. My current line of thinking is to get her something for when she is on the road for work. But what?!?

Thanks for any serious suggestions!
By the way, I must admit that I don’t know a lot of specifics about her special interests. She moved out when I was a baby and she lives across the country from me. (Which makes it all the more amazing that she can consistently come up with such targeted gifts for me!) Mainly I know about her professional life, since I do her proofreading on her books and other materials.

Let’s see… what else do I know that might be useful… She likes Indian food. (Gave her an Indian cookbook last Christmas though, and took her to an Indian restaurant in the spring when she was passing through town!) She meditiates. She’s a liberal, while I am a conservative! She used to write music, but I don’t know what she listens to these days. She does some hiking.

Question by suprax550: Travelling from chicago to toronto during christmas and i need to know if porter or air canada have coupons?
i need a VALID coupon and/ or deal. I am willing to fly any airline with upto one stop. any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

There’s no deals for christmas travel, sorry. If you want american airlines codes or whatever, I have the entertainment code for it. Its only 5% off the airfare.

Check aircanada’s site since they often have the cheapest available rate. You can also try to check westjet. Try to book in Canadian dollars, if possible.

If you choose to travel on xmas day, it’s usually very cheap.

Question by HMGator: Christmas in the Carribean: To book last minute or ahead of time?
My fiance and I will be married in October but only have time for a budget honeymoon in December after classes are over. We are considering booking a cruise or Caribbean vacation packages last minute in order to get a better deal. Would it be a mistake to try getting a last minute deal a few weeks before Christmas? Surely not everywhere is going to be full even at that time. Thank you in advance!

Answer by The Cruise Ladies
Most of the last minute deals on Christmas cruises are slim and far between. Most holiday sailing sell out early and rates increase rather than decrease. It is “supply and demand” If there are tons of cabins left, prices drop. If there are only a small amount-the price will go up.
I book my guests both ways and usually for a holiday sailing, booking early is best

Question by Maggie S: Where to stay in New York City at Christmas time?
I really want to go to new york to see the christmas decorations. I was going to go last year, but never did. My mom says we should go later, but I said I want to see it at christmas time. She wants a really nice, but cheap hotel. Are there any good ones in like manhatten or other places down by the best shopping? I think we are traveling by train so if you could find a good hotel and train deal that would be great. How long do the stores keep their christmas decorations up? I know that they are up in january. Does anyone know of any good guide books that would help? I would really like all the help I could get. Please give me information along with websites. Thanks!

Nice hotel and cheap are words that do not belong together for the Manhattan area. I found the Holiday Inn on 57th to be a fairly decent price (for New York!) and the rooms were clean.

It can be a bit of a walk to the main area of 42nd street, but you get to see more of the city.

Question by Dianaramaa: When is the best time to book hotels for New York during Christmas time?
I’m trying to find good deals for New York (Midtown Manhattan Hotels) for the first week of December and I was wondering when the best time to buy was? I know rates start to sky rocket but do certain hotels have deals or anything? All in all should I just book months ahead or wait about a month or two before for deals or such and book then?

Answer by Jamerican Steve
Book it now to guarantee a vacancy in the hotel you want near the holiday tree.
Hotels have seasonal rates so it will be more expensive the closer it gets.
By checking earlier, you can see which hotels has the best rate and amenities.

Only do this if you are guaranteed to come to NY to avoid cancellation fees.

Hotels packages will have a good deal but be sure to read the fine print.
Often you will have to use a certain airline, hotel rewards or credit card.

Good luck.

Question by imagine0218: Traveling over Christmas- how to deal with family?
My husband is deployed right now and will be coming home late November/early December ’08. He left for deployment training shortly after we are married in October. Last Christmas we spent the entire two weeks traveling between Ft. Bragg, Virginia (where we live) and the 2 locations in PA where our families lives. It was exhausting for both of us, and it was anything but relaxing for my husband, who said he refuses to do it this year. Here’s my thing. It’s not that he doesn’t want to see everyone when he comes home from deployment, but is it wrong for us to say, “Hey, we’re spending Christmas in Hawaii, alone, for a week, to get away from it all to to have some us time”? Since we’ve been married we seriously haven’t had any time to ourselves and the only time he’s been home his entire family has been around invading our privacy…seriously it’s like we’re dating. And since we’re taking a trip, is it wrong for us to skip exchanging presents? We’re not asking for presents
This will be our late honeymoon (since we couldn’t take one….Army sent him to training 3 days after the wedding)/ welcome home/ Christmas present to ourselves trip. And its probably the last thing we do before buying a house etc.
I’m not worried about my parents. They’re 110% supportive of our decision and always have been. I”m more worried about his family, and they’re the ones who guilt tripped us last year and caused us more stress into making an extra trip only to ignore us when we got there. They’re the ones who are less understanding. They’re also the ones who never visit. They’ll go all the way to NC, but they’ll never stop in VA. I’m more wondering how I deal with them. But yea I agree I shouldn’t feel guilty, I just want to know how to respond without flipping out on them and being a b*tch. =o)

Question by Sarah: Cheap caribbean vacation for week before Christmas?
I’m trying to book a cheap Caribbean vacation for two (Bahamas, Virgin Islands, St. Martin, DR, or Cancun, or similar) for the week before Christmas. When I get on the websites, they advertise a price, but as soon as I enter my details (travel dates, etc.) the price quadruples. What am I doing wrong? I am willing to fly back on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day — I thought this would make it cheaper but perhaps I am wrong? What dates would make it come up as the advertised price? I can be flexible (leaving anywhere between December 16th and 20th, coming back anywhere between 20th and 25th). Which dates/destinations would give me the best deals? Also, any recommendations as to specific destinations? Or places to book other than the websites that I have had the above mentioned problems with? I just want it to be simple! Thanks 🙂
Well, when do you have to return by for it to be considered ‘before Christmas.’ ? I have tried the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, but prices are equally high on all 3 days

The prices always go up a lot during Christmas. Try getting airfare using American Air using flexible date search, then book your hotel separately. I got really cheap airfare through them to Jamaica for this New Years holiday. LAX to MoBay for $ 409, but I got the tickets about a month ago.

High season starts in December and continues for a few months. The most economical time to travel to the Carribean is during the months of June through August.
